My own MAJOR solo marketing mistakes

The first time I went freelance (back then as a freelance copywriter in 2000), I had one big client that kept me afloat financially. And that client, my lifeline, just happened to be my former employer, who of course knew all about my copywriting skills from the time I'd worked there.

It seemed like a great idea at the time just to bide time and stay solo for a while because I was making good money (more than double my previous salary!) and loved being in charge of my own destiny.

But guess what? I mentioned that my main client sent me the vast majority of my business, and I struggled to find anyone else to hire me ... mainly because I didn't seek out new clients consistently using effective techniques and quite frankly, I limited my own options severely just by my own actions (and inaction!). But I didn't know this at the time.

Biding time isn't seeking out success!

You may have noticed that that I mentioned I went solo for the first time just above. And what that meant is that when I was only getting work from a single client (albeit a great one that sent plenty of work my way), I knew I needed to be scared, and I was scared.

What would happen if my only client stopped hiring me? What if they lost the big accounts I was working on, meaning my services would no longer be necessary? These were all very real possibilities! Why wasn't I getting business from other agencies I had contacted? What if I got sick and couldn't work for a while?

The "what ifs" were terrifying and I had no backup plan. And I couldn't find a resource or mentor to point me in the right direction.

My solution to the problem? I ended up giving up and finding a job that allowed me to learn plenty and gain tons of experience handling the marketing of huge accounts.

But that wasn't enough for me.

Even though I threw in the towel, I still knew I belonged out on my own. I wanted to control my own financial destiny. I didn't want to have to answer to a management board or convince our CFO each time I needed a small amount of budget to do something "frivolous" like give an employee a much-needed and deserved raise. I wanted to be my own boss!

I just didn't know how to get there.

So I started giving my business serious thought and figured out that I had missed something critical to my success when I was out on my own the first time: I wasn't treating my business like a business, and I didn't know how to get myself up to date on the skills I needed to succeed in that business.

I was a professional marketer, and
I had missed the point entirely!

So I started paying attention to how my marketing and branding campaigns were allowing my multinational clients like Sony Europe and Adobe to make enormous profits.

During that period I helped several big businesses make hundreds of thousands, even millions of dollars from single campaigns.

I learned from working down in the trenches which techniques actually help generate more profits and which are just "fancy schmancy" hype that don't get the kind of results huge clients want.

And one day something just clicked! The lightbulb went on inside my head, and I realized all that I'd done wrong the first go-round. I saw how my big business marketing experience applied to running my own small business.

Fast forward 5 years ...

When I launched Avenue East back in early 2005, things were different. I'd spent some time prior to opening the doors getting my branding and marketing plans ready. I developed a website I was proud of that I knew I could direct prospects to and start building my client list. And I knew that marketing needed to be a part of my routine rather than something I did only when I was scared of not having enough business. I wanted my cup to "runneth over"!

Within 6 months of opening the doors, I had a full roster of clients -- and I was able to expand our business to include services and wrote my High-Concept Brand Bible™, which never would have even come to mind as a possibility prior to having this "a-ha" moment about how to grow my business. I was making a six-figure income within less than a year in business, and ALL because I applied what I had learned as a big business marketer and created a simple, straightforward system to implement all that I know.

You don't have to kill yourself to get ahead!

In order to achieve all of my own success here at Avenue East, I don't want you to think that I've been killing myself to achieve my goals.

In fact, I rarely work overtime and haven't worked on the weekend in over a year.

I am able to take plenty of time off to travel (I've traveled all over the U.S. in the past year and a half, and I can take my work with me or leave my business to run itself for a few days with minimal effort).

I have been able to live where I want (Los Angeles and New York City -- living in both [outrageously expensive] cities was a dream of mine, and I've been able to afford to live in both while running my business).

My husband and I have no debt, a new car, a fantastic life ... It's my dream come true!

I've pretty much built my business around how I wanted to live my life, and I couldn't possibly have more fun with it!
